More than 45 East Londoners will be awarded Competent Crew Certificates from the Buffalo River Yacht Club this weekend, after successfully completing a comprehensive, six-week training programme at the Club.
The course included detailed theoretical instruction, complimented by long practical session at sea, equipped the learners with essential sailing knowledge and experience.
The brainchild of Buffalo River Yacht Club Commodore Eric Jordan, the course was attended by a large delegation from George Randall High School, which offers marine studies as a subject, as well as pupils from various other schools in and around East London.
Several privately-owned yachts and local skippers were roped in to give the students practical, on-board experience, while theoretical instruction took place at the Club’s premises on the Buffalo River.
Due to the phenomenal success of the course, as well as advance interest in future courses, a similar initiative will be launched in February next year for local school children.
However, adults interested in learning how to sail can attend certified training courses through the Buffalo River Sailing School all year round.
The grand finale of this year’s school-focused course will conclude with a celebratory braai at the Club on Saturday. Everyone with an interest in sailing is welcome to attend to meet the students, trainers and skippers, and learn more about the course offering.
