Whether it’s for a quick early morning run or ride, a lunch-time endorphine fix or a fun family hike, visit the Mountain Bike Track and Trail route at Floradale Nursery.
So close to East London surburbia that you can ride or run from home, the trail is mostly single track and winds its way through the Floradale Nursery farm, starting at Café du Jardin and following a 6km loop, through steep valleys, small forests and around beautiful dams.
It’s a tight course and not for faint-hearted cyclists as there are a few tricky drop-offs and small river crossings and some climbs which should get the heart pumping. However for the views out over Beacon Bay, it is all worth it. An A route for racing snakes and a B route for the weekend warrior divides the track in places.
Once on the track you can do as many loops as your legs will stand.
The trail is also great for birders with pintailed whydahs, red-billed wood-hoopoes and even fish eagles spotted at the dams.
There is a trail usage fee of R10 per person which can be popped into the honesty box outside Café Jardin during the week. This fee is R20 on weekends.
Perfect for after exercise, Café du Jardin offers breakfast, lunch and everything in-between, where you can sit under a beautiful jade vine canopy and dine alfresco. Breakfast is the full range from a full English, to croissants, eggs Benedict and Florentine to light lunches, burgers and delicious snack platters as well as pizza and pasta specials. It is fully licensed for those lazy afternoon G&Ts or an ice cold frosty or sauvignon blanc. The delicious cakes are baked fresh on the premises daily and the coffee is freshly ground from the finest beans.
The onsite jungle gym and sand pit keeps kids entertained while parents relax. The venue can be hired for private parties and night-time functions are held under the lit canopy.
