East London among priority areas in new Tourism Plan

Cabinet has approved a new marine and coastal tourism initiative which is set to prioritise East London, among other coastal nodes, during in the first five years of implementation.

The Marine and Coastal Tourism Implementation Plan, spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, aims to grow the industry and focus on job creation.

It will focus on six nodes during the first phase of implementation: East London, Port St Johns to Coffee Bay, Durban,Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and the West Coast.

The plan includes a range of tourism-promoting initiatives, including marketing, permitting, research, beach precinct development and skills development.

Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa told News 24 the plan had been developed in partnership with various tourism stakeholders.

“I would like to convey my gratitude to the relevant public and private stakeholders who took part in the development of the detailed plans for the Coastal and Marine Tourism Implementation Plan," she was quoted as saying. "I can say without a doubt that it is only through these kind of partnerships that we can successfully implement this plan; together 'We Do Tourism'."
