February is fantabulistic ...
February is fantabulistic ...

you get to spend so many more hours in your garden in the early morning... 5am to 6am is February fresh time, time to pick your veggies for that “wake-me-up” smoothie. Celery and Beetroot are divine when mixed with apple and a drizzle of honey

Take the whole month of February to be romantic

Grow your own Thyme ... this easy to grow herb does well in pots, great on a sunny windowsill and great as a gift ... maybe your Valentine needs some Thyme from you !! (ha,ha) In the garden it can also take quite a bit of heat too.
Alyssum, Begonia, Dianthus, Petunia, Portulaca, Vinca.
Perennials that look good now: Agapanthus (tall or dwarf), Aptenia (above), Coleus, Dianella, Thyme, Creeping Thyme, Rosemary and Perennial Portulaca.
Watch out for our “HOT-AZ-AL” display ... succulent groundcovers like sedum perennial portulaca and other vygies are always summer winners. By planting these in your beds they conserve precious water in the soil and look good too. Aloes, Echeveria, Sedum ... all these plant need is sun, sand and a little attention ... but they look so good they get alot of attention!
Why not give your Valentine a terracotta  pot plant for their garden or at the end of your patio....or at the braai area ...we can help with pot selection and plant choice... pretty flowers... aromatic herbs in pots or in a bed are wonderful memory-makers!  Just pick one of the combinations that you like or we can pot up your choice of favourites.
Alan’s Worm Farmz Update: Remember to check if your farm is moist enough during late Summer, and water it if it is dry...move it out of the rain .... too much rain isn’t good either.  If you want you Sweetheart to get a real surprise this Valentine’s Day ... why not get them to start their own Worm Farm? No more kitchen waste ... just compost waiting to be made by your earthworms. Come in and see how easy worm farming is ... even our 4-year old loves giving his banana skins to his earthworms.

NOVEMBER GARDEN ARTICLE
NOVEMBER GARDEN ARTICLE

Alyssum, Begonia, Calibrachoa, Daisy Bushes, Dianthus, Diascia,  Gazanias (try the new variegated ‘Ilanga‘) , Lobelia, Marigolds (both big & small) Nicotiana, Petunia, Phlox, Portulaca, Violas, Verbena, Vygies.
Plant Focus: ROSEMARY: is easy to grow, with a little care and a sunny place to grow it (in a bed or in a pot) Rosemary is a winner. Flower colours range ...we have the usual suspect Tuscan blue, but why not try white or pink flowered rosemary bushes, (so you can keep your colour co-ordinated gardens in sync).... so come and choose your favourite . Rosemary is delicious with lamb or new potatoes and as sosatie sticks. This versatile herb is  a natural insect repellent. Rosemary has done particularly well in my new wind-blown coastal garden, planted as an informal hedge, where their height gives protection.  Companion to beans and carrots.

Veggies to plant now : beans (bush beans or climbing) beetroot, broccoli carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, coriander, lettuce, seed potatoes, spinach, rocket, tomatoes and turnips, sweet melons, watermelon
Veggie Planting Secret to Success: Plant Marigolds where you need to brighten up a bed or bring colour into your veggie patch. The cute little yellow lemon drops or fiery orange Inca giant marigold heads will make a summer statement in your garden. They grow quickly and are a natural insect repellent
Make your own insect repellent :
Soak overnight: a bucketful of marigold leaves or rosemary leaves covered with boiling water.
Next morning: strain and add ½ cup soap powder and mix well.
Spray or sprinkle on affected plants: Mildew & Rust, Aphids, White fly & Mealy Bugs
REMEMBER: ... you can choose from our selection of veggie seedlings for only 50cents each ... “3 beetroot, 6 spinach, 4 onion....” you no longer need to think in 12’s !!! so now you can grow veggies for single servings or the whole fandamily!
PENSIONERS DAY IS WEDNESDAY!!  ... join our over 60’s club...AND GET 10% Discount Vouchers.

Great Tip : Dip your flower or veggie seedlings’ roots into diluted  ‘worm-wee’ for a seedling with more  “vuma”
